Open Gardens

Open Your Garden to our Members

A much-appreciated benefit of VHS Membership is the opportunity to visit the gardens of fellow-Members.

Initially these were called ‘Garden Visits’, and it was a much more formal program than it is today. Openings were arranged well in advance, on Sunday afternoons from February to October. Given that the only means of communicating with Members back then was via a mailed monthly newsletter, it is not surprising that this was the case.

In recent years we have moved to what was initially termed a “pop-up” model, allowing Members to open their gardens at short notice; this has proven to be very popular. We were even able to offer “virtual” open gardens during the Covid pandemic. You can view these by clicking on this link.

See photos on our Facebook group to get a taste of what you might see.

Would you like to open your garden for members to visit? Arranging to open your garden is easy and flexible to suit your requirements.

  • Contact the Open Gardens organizer at the table during the monthly VHS meetings to make arrangements.
  • Send an email to opengardens@vichortsociety.org

Do you know of any gardens that our members would enjoy (e.g. one in your neighbourhood, or one which belongs to a friend or family member)? Let us know, and we will get in touch with the homeowner(s) to ask if we can visit their garden to see if it would be suitable for inclusion in the program. If they agree to participate, they will receive free membership in the Society for one year.

Please remember to take your membership card with you when you visit a garden. It may be requested at the entrance. Guests are welcome if accompanied by a member.

Volunteers interested in helping out with the Open Gardens program should contact the Open Gardens organizer, or any other member of the VHS Executive.
